Wax sits on top of the paint and wears off. Xzilon, the ceramic coating we use, says wax breaks down at around 150°F of surface heat, which a dark truck hits on a summer afternoon. Its carbon-ceramic-with-graphene coating bonds to the clear coat, and Xzilon says it's tested up to 700°F. Xzilon also says the coating is anti-static, so dirt has a harder time sticking (Xzilon). People sometimes spell it "Xylon". Xylan is an unrelated industrial coating.
Windshield coatings
Diamon-Fusion, the glass coating we use, from Diamon-Fusion International (often written "Diamond Fusion"), is a two-step coating that chemically bonds to glass. It fills in the microscopic texture, so water and bugs roll off. DFI says it's sold only through dealerships, with trained applicators, and lasts up to 5 years on average on a windshield. Heavy wiper use and harsh weather shorten that. DFI doesn't issue automotive warranties itself; the selling dealer's program does (DFI FAQ).
