Gold or Blue Certified for high-mile buyers: worked examples

The odometer decides the tier: under 80,000 miles and 6 years a Ford can be Gold Certified; up to 150,000 miles and 10 years it can only be Blue. Because Gold's 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage (per Kelley Blue Book) runs from the original in-service date, a high-mile Gold truck has less powertrain time left than the "7 years" headline suggests. How much coverage is left: four examples
| Vehicle (example) | Tier possible | Comprehensive | Powertrain left (7 yr/100k from in-service) | Roadside |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3-yr-old Escape, 36,000 mi | Gold | 12 mo / 12,000 mi from purchase | About 4 yrs or 64,000 mi | 7 years |
| 5-yr-old F-150, 70,000 mi | Gold | 12 mo / 12,000 mi | About 2 yrs or 30,000 mi | 7 years |
| 6-yr-old Explorer, 85,000 mi | Blue only (over 80,000) | 90 days / 4,000 mi | None from Ford Blue Advantage | 90 days |
| 8-yr-old Super Duty, 110,000 mi | Blue only | 90 days / 4,000 mi | None | 90 days |

What the certified premium costs, worked out
| Vehicle price | At 1.8% (KBB listing data) | At 4.3% (Edmunds, 3-yr-old non-luxury) |
|---|---|---|
| $20,000 | $360 | $860 |
| $35,000 | $630 | $1,505 |
| $50,000 | $900 | $2,150 |
Simple percentages of the price, using the averages Consumer Reports (citing KBB) and Edmunds report; a given vehicle's gap can be larger or smaller. Compare that number with the price of a comparable extended service plan and a pre-purchase inspection for the same vehicle.
Rules of thumb for high-mile buyers
- 60,000–80,000 miles, under 6 years: Gold is still possible; check how much of the 100,000-mile powertrain cap is left.
- Over 80,000 miles: Blue is the only Ford tier. Its value is the 139-point inspection, CARFAX screen and 14-day/1,000-mile return, not long coverage.
- Over 150,000 miles or 10 years: not certifiable. At Swant Graber, units 10 model years or newer with under 150,000 miles get our 45-day/5,000-mile powertrain coverage (see dealer for details).
- Want coverage past Blue's 90 days: Ford Extended Service Plans are available at any Ford dealer; optional, never required.
Questions
Can a Ford with over 80,000 miles be Gold Certified?
No. Gold Certified requires a Ford model no more than 6 years old with less than 80,000 miles. Up to 10 years and under 150,000 miles, it can be Blue Certified.
How much powertrain warranty is left on a Gold Certified Ford with 70,000 miles?
If Gold's 7-year/100,000-mile coverage runs from the original in-service date, as Kelley Blue Book reports, a 5-year-old Gold Ford at 70,000 miles has about 2 years or 30,000 miles left, whichever comes first.
Is Blue Certified worth it on a high-mile truck?
Blue adds a 139-point inspection, a CARFAX screen, a 90-day/4,000-mile Ford comprehensive warranty, 90 days of roadside and a 14-day/1,000-mile Money Back Guarantee. Its value is the inspection and return window more than long coverage.
