GAP coverage vs. GAP insurance: what it pays and who needs it

If your vehicle is totaled or stolen while you owe more than it is worth, CNA GAP can waive the difference, including up to $1,000 of your insurance deductible. It is always optional. Here are straight answers to the 20 questions Barron area buyers ask most.

GAP in 30 seconds

  • GAP pays the difference between your auto insurance settlement and your loan balance after a total loss or theft.
  • Swant Graber offers CNA GAP. It covers up to $1,000 of your insurance deductible, loans up to 150% of MSRP (new) or NADA retail (used), vehicles up to $100,000 and terms up to 84 months.
  • It must be added when you sign your loan, and it is optional; Wisconsin law bars requiring it for credit (Wis. Stat. s. 218.0148).
  • In Wisconsin you can cancel any time with no fee: full refund within 30 days, partial refund after.
  • Cash buyers and owners with no loan do not need GAP.

How it pays

A total loss, with and without GAP

CNA's own example: you owe $30,000, insurance values the vehicle at $22,000, and your deductible is $1,000.

Loan balance$30,000
Insurance pays $22,000 minus $1,000 deductible−$21,000
You owe without GAP$9,000
With CNA GAP, as little as$0

Checklist

Is GAP worth it for you?

GAP is worth a look if any of these fit:

  • You are putting less than about 20% down, or nothing down
  • Your term is 72 or 84 months
  • You are rolling negative equity from a trade into the new loan
  • You drive a lot of miles each year
  • The vehicle you are buying tends to lose value quickly
  • You could not easily pay several thousand dollars to a lender after a total loss

Paying cash or owing less than the vehicle is worth? You likely do not need GAP.

FAQ

GAP coverage FAQ

What is GAP insurance and how does it work?

If your vehicle is totaled or stolen, your auto insurer usually pays its actual cash value, which can be less than your loan balance. GAP waives some or all of that difference so you are not making payments on a vehicle you no longer have. Past-due payments and late fees are not waived.

What is the difference between dealership GAP and insurance-company GAP?

Dealership GAP, like the CNA GAP we offer, is a waiver added to your finance contract: if the vehicle is totaled or stolen, the gap between the insurance settlement and your loan balance is waived. It is bought once, at signing, and stays with the loan no matter which auto insurer you use. Insurance-company GAP (often called loan/lease payoff) is an add-on to your auto policy. Many insurance GAP policies cap the payout at a percentage of the vehicle's value, commonly 25%, require you to keep collision and comprehensive with that insurer, and are limited to new vehicles or the original owner.

Which is better coverage, dealership GAP or insurance GAP?

For most financed buyers, dealership GAP is the stronger coverage. CNA GAP is built around the loan: it allows financing up to 150% of MSRP (new) or NADA retail (used), covers new and used vehicles up to $100,000 and terms up to 84 months, and covers up to $1,000 of your insurance deductible. Many insurance GAP policies, by comparison, cap the payout (commonly at 25% of the vehicle's value), do not cover the deductible, may not cover negative equity rolled in from a previous vehicle, end if you switch insurers, and are limited to new vehicles or the original owner. Insurer GAP can cost less on a small gap, so compare both; the CFPB recommends comparing price and coverage.

What is negative equity on a car?

Negative equity means you owe more on your current vehicle than it is worth. Example: you owe $18,000 on your trade and it is worth $15,000, so you have $3,000 of negative equity. If that $3,000 is added to your next loan, you start the new loan owing more than the new vehicle is worth, which is exactly the situation GAP is built for.

When does GAP matter most?

GAP matters when your loan balance can be higher than the vehicle's value: a small or no down payment, a long term (72 to 84 months), negative equity rolled in, lots of miles each year (common for Barron area commuters), or a vehicle that depreciates quickly. Early in a loan the vehicle usually loses value faster than you pay down the balance.

Does a cash buyer need GAP?

No. GAP only covers a loan or lease balance. If you pay cash or your loan is paid off, there is no balance to cover, and your auto insurance settles the vehicle's value directly with you.

Is GAP required to get a car loan?

No. GAP is optional. Wisconsin law requires a written disclosure that buying GAP is optional and that neither the credit, its terms, nor the vehicle sale may be conditioned on buying it. The CFPB says you cannot be required to buy GAP unless the contract explicitly says so, in which case its cost must be in the finance charge and APR.

What are the GAP insurance laws in Wisconsin?

Yes. Wis. Stat. s. 218.0148 regulates GAP waivers: required disclosures (optional, cost, terms, cancellation rights, how to claim), cancellation at any time without penalty, refund rules, and no cancellation fees. The Wisconsin DFI has also issued a Consumer Act opinion requiring a separate signed choice to buy GAP. Federally, the CFPB and FTC treat GAP as an optional add-on you can decline or negotiate.

Can I cancel GAP and get a refund in Wisconsin?

Yes. In Wisconsin you can cancel at any time without penalty. Cancel within 30 days and you get a full refund or credit (plus related finance charges). After 30 days you get a partial refund figured at least as favorably as the Rule of 78. No cancellation fee is allowed. No refund is owed if the vehicle was totaled or stolen and GAP paid or will pay.

Do I get a GAP refund if I pay off, sell or trade the vehicle?

GAP ends when the loan is paid in full, which includes paying it off at a sale or trade-in. Under Wisconsin law that termination entitles you to the unused refund described above. Ask us or the lender for the cancellation form and keep your payoff letter.

What GAP options do you offer?

We offer CNA GAP, with several CNA GAP options depending on your vehicle and loan. Ask our finance team which one fits your deal; every waiver has its own terms, limits, exclusions and Wisconsin provisions, and we review the actual addendum with you before you sign.

Does CNA GAP pay my insurance deductible?

Yes, up to $1,000, to the extent the deductible is part of the gap amount. Example from CNA: $30,000 owed, $22,000 actual cash value and a $1,000 deductible leaves $9,000 out of pocket, which a GAP waiver can reduce to as little as $0.

What other benefits come with CNA GAP?

CNA's waivers cover new and used vehicles, loans up to 84 months, vehicles up to $100,000 retail, and financing up to 150% of MSRP (new) or NADA retail (used). Some CNA GAP programs add a credit toward a replacement vehicle bought from the selling dealer; Wisconsin law allows that kind of benefit. Ask us whether the option on your deal includes it.

What does GAP not cover?

GAP does not waive past-due payments, late fees, or amounts added after the loan started, and it does not refund your down payment. Refundable add-ons like service contracts are typically refunded rather than waived. Check the exclusions on your addendum.

Is GAP insurance worth it?

It is worth it when the gap could be large: little down, a long term, negative equity, or high miles. It is usually not worth it if you put a large amount down, have a short loan, or owe less than the vehicle is worth. The CFPB notes add-ons may not give value in every situation, so decide based on your numbers.

How much does GAP cost?

Price depends on the program, vehicle, and term, and it is disclosed in writing before you sign, as Wisconsin law requires. If it is included in your loan, it adds to the amount financed and interest. Ask us for the exact figure on your deal and compare it with your insurer.

Can I add CNA GAP after I buy?

No. CNA GAP waivers are an addendum to your loan and must be purchased during the financing transaction. If you have already bought, ask your auto insurer whether it offers loan/lease payoff coverage.

Does GAP transfer to my next vehicle?

No. A GAP waiver covers the loan and vehicle on that contract. When you trade, the old waiver ends (with any refund owed) and you can choose new coverage on the new loan.

Do I need GAP on a lease?

Many leases already include gap coverage. Check your lease agreement before buying any separately.

How do I file a CNA GAP claim?

First file with your auto insurer and get the total-loss settlement. Then send CNA: the settlement statement, the insurer's valuation, your finance agreement, payment history, payoff as of the date of loss, and the buyer's order. Email gapclaims@cnanational.com, fax (888) 969-2872, or mail CNA National Warranty, Attention: GAP Program Administrator, P.O. Box 2840, Scottsdale, AZ 85252. We can pull your buyer's order for you.
