How does a trade-in with a loan payoff work?

Short answer

Short answer

The dealer pays off your old loan and credits your trade-in value toward the new vehicle. If the trade is worth more than you owe, the difference lowers your price. If you owe more than it's worth, that negative equity is paid in cash or added to the new loan.

What it means in the Barron area

Before you shop, get the payoff amount from your lender, since it's different from the balance on your statement. Wisconsin taxes the new vehicle's price after the trade-in allowance when it's one transaction. Paying off your loan doesn't change that: DOR Publication 202's example taxes the price minus the full trade allowance, even when the dealer also pays a lien.

The CFPB warns that rolling negative equity into a new loan means borrowing more than the vehicle's price, which raises the total cost. Options include paying the difference in cash, choosing a lower-priced vehicle, or waiting until you owe less.

Worked example Estimate

Selling price, new truck$35,000.00
Trade-in allowance-$15,000.00
Loan payoff on your trade+$18,000.00
Negative equity$3,000.00
Sales tax, 5.5% of $20,000 (price minus trade allowance)$1,100.00
Amount before title, plates and service fee$39,100.00

Estimate, not a quote. Barron County rate. Add title, plates, the $127.50 service fee (taxable, so about $7.01 more tax) and the $38 electronic processing fee, as shown on our out-the-door page. Questions

Does my loan payoff lower my sales tax?

No. Wisconsin figures tax on the price minus the trade allowance; the payoff doesn't change that (DOR Publication 202).

What do I bring to trade in a vehicle with a loan?

Your lender's name and account number, the payoff amount, your registration, all keys and any service records.

Can I trade in a leased vehicle?

Often, yes. Ask your leasing company for the payoff amount and ask us how it applies to your deal.

What if I'm upside down on my loan?

You can pay the difference, roll it into the new loan, or wait. The CFPB notes rolling it in raises your total loan cost.
