What does 'out the door' price mean?
Reviewed by Cory Gunderson, Internet Sales & Finance Manager · Last checked October 27, 2026
Short answer
The out-the-door price is the total you actually pay to drive the vehicle home: the selling price, minus any trade-in, plus sales tax, the Wisconsin title fee, registration (plates), the $127.50 dealer service fee and the $38 electronic processing fee. It's the one number to compare between dealers.
What it means in the Barron area
The advertised price is only the start. In Barron County, sales tax is 5% state plus 0.5% county, figured on the selling price after your trade-in allowance when the trade and purchase are one deal. WisDOT charges a title fee and a registration fee that depends on the vehicle type, and a dealer may add a service fee for the required paperwork if it's disclosed up front. Local wheel taxes depend on where the vehicle is kept. WisDOT's list includes the City of Rice Lake ($20) but not the City of Barron or Barron County as of the date below. If you finance, WisDOT also charges a small lien (security interest) listing fee. Source: WisDOT, referenced Oct 28, 2026. Fees may change; check the source for current amounts.
Live out of state? A cash deal is the selling price plus our $127.50 doc fee, and you pay your own state's tax and fees at home. On financed deals, we handle the out-of-state paperwork for you. See buying here if you live in Minnesota.
- Sales tax: 5% Wisconsin + 0.5% Barron County = 5.5%, on price minus trade allowance.
- Title: $214.50 for an original title or transfer (WisDOT). Source: WisDOT, referenced Oct 28, 2026. Fees may change; check the source for current amounts.
- Plates: automobile $85 a year + $12 issuance; light truck up to 6,000 lbs $100 a year + $12 issuance; 8,000 lbs $116.60 + $12. Hybrids add $75 a year and EVs $175 a year. Source: WisDOT, referenced Oct 28, 2026. Fees may change; check the source for current amounts.
- Lien listing (if financed): $10 (WisDOT).
- Swant Graber service (doc) fee: $127.50, disclosed before the sale. Wisconsin rules say it can't be raised after it's disclosed, and Wisconsin DOR counts it as part of the taxable sales price.
- Electronic processing (DMV) fee: $38, for filing your title and registration electronically with WisDOT. Wisconsin DOR says this fee isn't subject to sales tax.
- Manufacturer rebates lower what you pay but not the taxable price; Wisconsin DOR says you still owe sales tax on the rebate amount. Loan payoff on a trade doesn't change the tax either; any amount owed above the trade value is added to the deal (negative equity).
Worked example Estimate
| Selling price, used pickup | $30,000.00 |
|---|---|
| Minus trade-in allowance | -$10,000.00 |
| Sales tax, 5.5% of $20,127.50 (price minus trade, plus the taxable doc fee) | $1,107.01 |
| WisDOT title fee | $214.50 |
| Plates, light truck 6,000 lbs ($100 + $12 issuance) | $112.00 |
| Swant Graber service (doc) fee | $127.50 |
| Electronic processing (DMV) fee | $38.00 |
| Estimated out-the-door | $21,599.01 |
Estimate, not a quote. Cash purchase kept in the Barron area. Add $10 if financed (lien listing) and $20 if the truck is kept in the City of Rice Lake (wheel tax). Subtract any cash down from this total, and add any loan payoff above the trade value. Registration can be prorated or transferred from a plate you already own, so your number may differ. Questions
Is sales tax charged on the full price if I trade in?
No. When the trade-in and purchase are one transaction, Wisconsin taxes the price after the trade-in allowance (DOR Publication 202).
Is the dealer service fee required by the state?
No. Wisconsin allows a dealer to charge a service fee for required paperwork if it's fully disclosed beforehand, and it can't be increased after disclosure (Trans 139.05(8)).
Is there a wheel tax in Barron?
WisDOT's wheel tax list doesn't include the City of Barron or Barron County as of October 27, 2026. The City of Rice Lake charges $20.
Does a manufacturer rebate lower the sales tax?
No. Wisconsin DOR Publication 202 says a manufacturer rebate does not reduce the taxable sales price, even when it is applied to the price. It lowers what you pay, not the tax.
What is the $38 electronic processing fee?
It is the fee for filing your title and registration electronically with WisDOT. Wisconsin DOR Publication 202 says this fee is not subject to sales tax.
What if I owe more on my trade than it is worth?
That difference (negative equity) is added to the amount you pay or finance. The payoff does not change the sales tax, which is figured on the price minus the trade allowance.
Can I get the out-the-door price in writing before I visit?
Yes. Ask us and we'll send an itemized out-the-door price for the exact vehicle.
