5.3L EcoTec3 V8
The workhorse. Dynamic Fuel Management deactivates cylinders under light load. Runs on regular. Delivers the Tahoe's top 8,400-lb rating (2WD, NHT). Owners should follow oil-change intervals closely — lifter health on DFM/AFM V8s is the most-discussed long-term issue.
6.2L EcoTec3 V8
Standard on High Country, optional on RST, Z71 and Premier. 420 hp makes the Tahoe feel much lighter; premium 91 is recommended for full output. Tow ratings are slightly lower than the 5.3L because the configurations carrying it are heavier.
3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel
Inline-six, 495 lb-ft at just 1,500 rpm. Chevrolet quotes up to 624 miles of EPA highway range. Needs Diesel Exhaust Fluid and diesel fuel; in Wisconsin winters use the block heater below about 0°F. Worth it for high-mileage highway drivers and frequent towers; less so for short-trip town driving, where a diesel's emissions system prefers longer runs.
The 10-speed automatic
Every 2027 Tahoe engine pairs with a 10-speed automatic, with Tow/Haul mode. No CVT.
Real-world MPG
Expect mid-teens around town and around 20 on the highway with the 5.3L, a bit less with the 6.2L, and mid-20s highway with the Duramax. Cold, short trips and towing cut those numbers.
