Vehicle History Reports Explained: CARFAX, AutoCheck & NMVTIS | Barron, WI

Reviewed by Cory Gunderson, Internet Sales & Finance Manager | Updated Oct 26, 2026

Shopping used near Barron, Rice Lake, Cumberland, Chetek or Cameron? A vehicle history report is one of the first things to check. This guide explains what the reports are, where the data comes from, how certified pre-owned programs use them, and why a report never replaces a good look at the vehicle.

Short answer: A vehicle history report is a VIN-based record of reported events - title brands, accidents, odometer readings, owners, service and more. The main sources are CARFAX, AutoCheck (Experian) and the federal NMVTIS title database. A report only shows what was reported, so use it with an inspection, a free open recall check and the Wisconsin Buyers Guide on the window. Both Swant Graber stores in Barron, WI - Swant Graber Motors and Swant Graber Ford - are CARFAX Advantage Dealers, so the CARFAX report on any of our used cars and trucks is free, whether you shop from Barron, Rice Lake, Cumberland or Chetek. For a free VIN check before you shop anywhere, use NICB VINCheck and NHTSA's recall lookup.

What is a vehicle history report?

A vehicle history report pulls together records tied to a vehicle's 17-character VIN. Depending on the provider, it can show title history and brands (salvage, rebuilt, flood, lemon buyback), reported accidents and damage, odometer readings over time, number of owners and how the vehicle was used (personal, fleet, rental), registration locations, service visits, and open recalls.

Who provides vehicle history reports?

CARFAX

The company says it created the vehicle history report in 1986. Its reports are used by many dealers and by manufacturer certified programs, including Ford Blue Advantage, CarBravo and Stellantis certified.

AutoCheck (Experian)

A second commercial report from the credit bureau Experian, common in dealer and auction listings. It draws on its own data sources, so it can show events another report does not.

NMVTIS

The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System is a federal database run under the U.S. Department of Justice. States, insurers and junk and salvage yards are required to report to it. Consumers buy NMVTIS reports through approved providers listed at vehiclehistory.bja.ojp.gov. These cover title, brand, odometer and total-loss data, not service or minor accidents.

NICB VINCheck

A free lookup from the National Insurance Crime Bureau at nicb.org/vincheck. It checks participating insurers' records for reported theft that was not recovered and for salvage or total-loss reports. It is limited to a few searches per day.

Manufacturer CPO checks

Ford, GM (CarBravo) and Stellantis each require a history report as part of certification, on top of a multi-point inspection. Vehicles with problems like flood, frame or salvage history are kept out.

Free recall check

Open safety recalls are free to check by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Any Ford, Chevrolet, Ram or Dodge dealer can do recall repairs at no charge.

Where does history report data come from?

Providers buy or receive records from many sources. The mix differs by provider, which is why two reports on the same VIN can differ.

  • State DMVs and title agencies - title transfers, title brands, registrations and odometer readings at sale.
  • Insurance companies - claims and total-loss decisions.
  • Auto auctions - auction sales, announced damage and frame problems.
  • Service and repair shops - oil changes, repairs and inspections from dealers and shops that share data.
  • Police and fire departments - accident and fire reports where available.
  • Manufacturers - recalls and buyback (lemon) records.
  • Fleet and rental companies - use type and in-service dates.
  • Junk and salvage yards - required NMVTIS reports.

What can a vehicle history report miss?

  • Accidents that were never reported to police or an insurer.
  • Damage fixed with cash at a shop that does not share data.
  • Service done at home or at shops outside the provider's network.
  • Very recent events that have not reached the database yet.
  • Title problems hidden by moving a vehicle between states (title washing).
  • Wear and condition: tires, brakes, rust, fluid leaks and how the vehicle was driven.

A clean report means no problems were reported. It does not prove a vehicle has never had a problem.

What is a CARFAX Advantage Dealer?

CARFAX Advantage Dealer: CARFAX launched the program in 2011 for dealers that subscribe to CARFAX and have unlimited access to CARFAX Vehicle History Reports. CARFAX describes it as a way to recognize dealers committed to transparency (CARFAX, 2011).

Is "Lifetime Advantage" a CARFAX program?

CARFAX Lifetime Dealer: There is no program called "Lifetime Advantage." The real program, launched by CARFAX in January 2022, is the CARFAX Lifetime Dealer badge. CARFAX says a Lifetime Dealer offers CARFAX Vehicle History Reports, lists vehicles on CARFAX Used Car Listings, and uses CARFAX for Life to help customers track maintenance in the CARFAX Car Care app (CARFAX, 2022).

Are Swant Graber's stores CARFAX Advantage Dealers?

Yes. Both of our Barron stores - Swant Graber Motors (Chevrolet, Ram, Dodge) and Swant Graber Ford - are CARFAX Advantage Dealers. See the CARFAX dealer pages for Swant Graber Motors and Swant Graber Ford. Because both stores are Advantage Dealers, you never pay out of pocket for a CARFAX report on our pre-owned vehicles, whether you open it on our website or ask for one in person. Neither store is listed as a CARFAX Lifetime Dealer.

Certified vs non-certified: how much does the report matter?

Certified pre-owned: the vehicle had to pass a manufacturer history screen and a multi-point inspection, and it comes with factory-backed warranty coverage. Vehicles with major reported problems can't be certified.

Non-certified used: there is no manufacturer screen, so the history report and an inspection matter even more. At Swant Graber, used vehicles 10 model years old or newer with under 150,000 miles come with a 45-day/5,000-mile powertrain warranty. Every used vehicle also carries the Wisconsin Buyers Guide, which lists its warranty terms and known problems.

How do you read a vehicle history report?

Work through these six sections in order. For a one-page version, see our quick checklist for reading a used vehicle history.

1. Title brands

Look for salvage, rebuilt, flood, fire, hail or lemon/manufacturer buyback brands. A brand affects value, insurance and financing.

2. Odometer

Mileage should go up at every reading. A drop, a long gap or a "not actual mileage" note deserves questions.

3. Owners and use

Check the number of owners, how long each kept the vehicle, the states it was registered in, and whether it was a rental or fleet unit.

4. Accidents and damage

Note the severity, airbag deployment, structural damage and where the impact was. Then ask what was repaired and where.

5. Service records

Regular oil changes and maintenance are a good sign. Missing records don't always mean neglect.

6. Open recalls

Confirm any open recall at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with our recall check by VIN guide, and ask whether the repair has been done.

Do you still need an inspection with a clean report?

A report is a record of paperwork, not the vehicle's condition. Up here, salt and winter roads make rust, brake lines, suspension and the underbody worth a close look. Take a test drive, look under the vehicle, and ask for recent inspection or reconditioning records. You are welcome to inspect any of our vehicles, and to arrange a pre-purchase inspection by an independent mechanic. Every used vehicle also displays the Wisconsin Buyers Guide on the window. See our inspection checklist for what certified techs check.

Vehicle history report FAQ

What is the difference between CARFAX and AutoCheck?

Both are commercial vehicle history reports. AutoCheck is from Experian. They use different data sources, so one report can show something the other does not.

What is NMVTIS?

NMVTIS is the federal National Motor Vehicle Title Information System. States, insurers and salvage yards are required to report to it. Consumers get NMVTIS title and brand reports from approved providers listed at vehiclehistory.bja.ojp.gov.

Is there a free way to check for theft or salvage?

Yes. NICB VINCheck at nicb.org/vincheck is free and checks participating insurers' theft and total-loss records. NHTSA's recall lookup is also free.

What is a CARFAX Advantage Dealer?

A dealer that subscribes to CARFAX and has unlimited access to CARFAX Vehicle History Reports. Both Swant Graber Motors and Swant Graber Ford in Barron, WI are CARFAX Advantage Dealers.

Why can CARFAX and AutoCheck show different results for the same VIN?

Each provider buys or receives records from its own mix of DMVs, insurers, auctions and service shops. A shop or insurer that reports to one may not report to the other, so checking both can fill gaps.

Do certified pre-owned vehicles require a clean history?

Yes. Ford Blue Advantage, CarBravo and Stellantis certified all run a CARFAX report and exclude vehicles with serious reported problems such as flood, frame or salvage history.

Can I get a CARFAX report on a vehicle at Swant Graber?

Yes. It's free. As CARFAX Advantage Dealers, both our stores let you view the CARFAX report on our website or get one in person at no cost to you.
