Short answer
Go to NHTSA.gov/recalls and enter the 17-character VIN (lower-left of the windshield, registration or insurance card).
It shows incomplete safety recalls from the past 15 calendar years from major manufacturers. It doesn't show completed recalls, non-safety campaigns or very new recalls whose VINs aren't loaded yet.
Where to find the VIN
Lower-left corner of the windshield, your registration card, or your insurance card.
What the lookup covers, and doesn't
| Covered by the NHTSA VIN tool | Not covered | |
|---|---|---|
| Recall type | Incomplete safety recalls | Completed recalls; non-safety customer-service campaigns |
| Time | Past 15 calendar years | Older than 15 years, unless the manufacturer extends |
| Makers | Major light-vehicle manufacturers | Some small or specialty manufacturers; international vehicles |
| New recalls | Added continuously | Very recent recalls before all VINs are identified |
