What does the check engine light mean?
Reviewed by Cory Gunderson, Internet Sales & Finance Manager · Last checked October 27, 2026
Short answer
It means the engine's computer has detected a problem. FuelEconomy.gov says it could be as minor as a loose gas cap, or something more serious that lowers fuel economy, raises emissions or leads to costly repairs. Have it inspected when it comes on, even if the vehicle seems to drive normally.
The details
The light is also called the malfunction indicator lamp. A few practical tips:
- Check the gas cap first. Tighten it until it clicks. The light may take a few drive cycles to go out.
- Flashing light: check your owner's manual right away for what your vehicle's maker says to do.
- Don't ignore it. FuelEconomy.gov notes modern vehicles may drive normally even when they need a repair.
