Short answer
Keep a dated receipt for every service with mileage, the parts used and the work done. Follow your owner's manual schedule.
The FTC says it's illegal for a manufacturer or dealer to void your warranty or deny coverage just because someone else did routine maintenance. Coverage for a part can be denied if improper work or an aftermarket part caused the damage, which is another reason to keep records.
What to keep
- Date and mileage.
- What was done and which parts and fluids were used.
- Who did it.

Your warranty and outside service
Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, enforced by the FTC, you can have routine maintenance done anywhere, including yourself. If the warranty says repairs are free, the manufacturer can require you to use its authorized facilities for that covered repair.

Will servicing my vehicle elsewhere void the warranty?
