Questions answered here
- What should I do right after hitting a deer?
Get your vehicle safely off the road if you can. Call 911 if anyone is hurt or the deer is in the active lane. Otherwise, report the crash or call local law enforcement. Stay buckled inside your vehicle while you wait, and never try to move an injured deer.
- Do I have to report hitting a deer in Wisconsin?
If the crash injures anyone or causes $1,000 or more in damage to a person's vehicle or property, yes. Wis. Stat. 346.70 requires the report, and a deer crash counts like any other. If law enforcement doesn't file it, you file form DT4002 with WisDOT within 10 days.
- Can I keep a deer I hit with my car in Wisconsin?
Yes. The DNR says the driver who hits and kills a deer gets first claim to the carcass. You must register it with the DNR before you take it or move it from the scene, online through GameReg or by calling 608-267-7691, and you'll need your DNR customer ID.
- Does car insurance cover hitting a deer?
Usually, under comprehensive coverage. Wisconsin's Office of the Commissioner of Insurance says most policies cover hitting a deer under comprehensive, not collision. Comprehensive pays for damage from causes other than a collision, including hitting an animal, minus your deductible.
- When are deer crashes most common in Wisconsin?
October and November, during the breeding season, with a second peak in May and June when yearlings look for new territory. WisDOT's preliminary data counted 17,795 deer crashes in Wisconsin in 2025, with six deaths and 720 injuries.
