Questions answered here
- What does the check engine light mean?
It means the engine's computer has detected a problem. FuelEconomy.gov says it could be as minor as a loose gas cap, or something more serious that lowers fuel economy, raises emissions or leads to costly repairs. Have it inspected when it comes on, even if the vehicle seems to drive normally.
- Why does my tire pressure light come on when it gets cold?
Tire pressure drops in colder temperatures, per FuelEconomy.gov, so the first cold mornings often trigger the low-pressure light. Inflate to the pressure on the driver's door-jamb sticker or in your owner's manual, not the maximum printed on the tire's sidewall.
- Why do car batteries die in cold weather?
Cold reduces battery performance. FuelEconomy.gov notes it makes it harder for the alternator to keep the battery charged, especially on short trips with the heater, defroster and seat heaters running. A battery that was marginal in fall often fails on the first hard freeze.
- How often should I change my oil?
Go by your owner's manual and the oil-life monitor, since the interval differs by engine and by how you drive. Use the oil grade the manufacturer recommends. FuelEconomy.gov says using the wrong grade can cut gas mileage by 1% to 2%.
- Will using an independent shop void my new-car warranty?
No. Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, the FTC says a manufacturer or dealer can't void your warranty or deny coverage just because someone else did the maintenance or because you used aftermarket parts. They can deny a specific repair only if they show that the outside work or part caused the damage.
