Short answer

Short answer

Cold reduces battery performance. FuelEconomy.gov notes it makes it harder for the alternator to keep the battery charged, especially on short trips with the heater, defroster and seat heaters running. A battery that was marginal in fall often fails on the first hard freeze.

The details

What helps:

  • Have the battery tested before winter, especially if it's several years old.
  • Limit extra electrical load on short trips. FuelEconomy.gov suggests not using seat warmers or defrosters more than necessary.
  • Use a block heater if your vehicle has one, on the coldest nights.
  • Diesel? Our diesel winter page covers cold-start tips from the owner's manuals.
