Remote start in a Wisconsin winter: what the owner's manuals say

How long it runs, why it sometimes won't start, and the one place you should never use it.

The short answer

Answer

On a 2026 Silverado 1500, press the remote start button twice; the engine runs 15 minutes, and a second remote start gives up to 30 minutes of total run time before you have to start and turn off the truck. A 2026 F-150 allows two remote starts in a row, with run time set in the touchscreen.

Ford's manual warns never to remote start in a closed garage, because exhaust fumes are toxic. Both manuals say not to use it when fuel is low, and GM's adds that some communities restrict remote starters, so check local rules.

Safety and common surprises

  • Open the garage door first. Ford's manual warns against starting the engine in a closed garage; exhaust fumes are toxic.
  • Low fuel: both manuals say not to use remote start when fuel is low.
  • Hood switch: an open or misaligned hood blocks remote start on both trucks.
  • Ford outlets: the F-150 manual notes power outlets can turn on during a remote start.
  • Aftermarket systems: Ford's manual says its system isn't compatible with non-Ford aftermarket remote start.
  • Ram: features vary by trim and model year; check the owner's manual or the Ram app for your truck.

Winter habits

Remote start warms the cabin; it doesn't replace clearing snow and ice from every window and light. Our winter gas mileage page covers warm-up and idling. For diesels, plug in the block heater on the coldest nights per the manual.

Questions

How long does remote start run on a Silverado?

Per GM's 2026 manual, 15 minutes per start and up to 30 minutes total; after that the vehicle must be started and turned off before remote start works again.

Why won't my remote start work?

Common reasons in both manuals: hood not fully closed, not in Park, or (Chevrolet) the key inside, hazards on or the check-engine light on.
