The short answer
Start with the manufacturer's plow-prep option: Chevrolet's RPO VYU on Silverado 1500, Ford's Snow Plow Prep Package (473) on Super Duty, and Ram's Snowplow Prep, standard on the 2026 Ram 2500. GM's manual says adding a plow without VYU can damage the truck, and those repairs aren't covered.
Ford says plow prep is not supported on the 2026 F-150, with no guidance for residential or personal use. Both GM and Ford say not to exceed 45 mph with a plow mounted.

Ford also allows up to 1,500 lb of rear ballast, recommends all-terrain tires and roof clearance lights, and says toe alignment and headlight aim may need resetting after a plow is installed.
GM's front-axle math
Chevrolet's manual shows how a plow loads the front axle: plow weight × (distance ahead of the front axle + wheelbase) ÷ wheelbase. Its example: a 700 lb plow 4 ft ahead of the axle on a 10 ft wheelbase puts about 980 lb on the front axle. Compare that to the front GAWR on the door-jamb label. Rear ballast is set by the installer per GM's upfitter manual.
On the road: angle the blade when driving above 15 mph so air reaches the radiator, and stay under 45 mph.
Ford Super Duty plowing rules from the owner's manual
- Drive 500 miles before you plow with a new truck.
- Use 4L below 5 mph; 4H above 5 mph, and don't exceed 15 mph while plowing.
- Don't shift into reverse until the engine is at idle and the truck is stopped.
- Don't spin the wheels over 34 mph.
- Above freezing, angle the blade full left or right if you drive more than 15 miles.
- Follow the severe-duty oil and transmission fluid schedule.
- Look for the installer's alterer label; extra lamps may be required.
