Snowmobile trailers in Wisconsin: plates, brakes, registration and the tow vehicle

Everything between your driveway and the trailhead, with the statute or DNR page for each rule.

The short answer

Answer

A trailer with a gross weight of 3,000 lb or less that isn't used for hire is exempt from Wisconsin registration (Wis. Stat. 341.05(13m)); you can register it voluntarily with a light-trailer plate. At 3,000 lb or more, Wisconsin requires trailer brakes (Wis. Stat. 347.35(3)(a)).

Snowmobiles register with the DNR, not the DMV: within 10 days of purchase, $30 for a public-use registration. Trails also need a trail pass ($10 for AWSC club members, $30 otherwise).

The sleds

  • Register within 10 days of purchase; dealers submit within 5 days of a sale. Public registration: $30, renewed every 3 years.
  • Kept in Wisconsin more than 15 consecutive days? It must be registered here, even with out-of-state registration.
  • Trail pass for public trails: $10 for AWSC club members, $30 for non-members; expires June 30.
  • Decals on both sides of the cowling; carry the registration certificate.

The tow vehicle

Check the door-jamb tire and loading label and the hitch rating, not only the brochure tow number. A two-place enclosed trailer and sleds can push past a small SUV's limit. Our towing worksheet adds it up, and 4WD modes covers icy landings and trailheads.
