The short answer
Pick the truck from the camper's loaded weight and tongue or pin weight, then check the exact truck's tow rating, payload and rear-axle rating. Payload usually runs out before tow rating, especially with a fifth-wheel.
Chevrolet's 2026 Trailering Guide puts conventional tongue weight at 10–15% of loaded trailer weight and fifth-wheel/gooseneck at 15–25%. A 12,000-lb fifth-wheel at 20% puts about 2,400 lb on the truck before people and gear, which is heavy-duty territory.
The weights that matter
| Weight | Where to find it |
|---|---|
| Camper GVWR or loaded weight | Camper's VIN label; weigh it loaded at a scale |
| Tongue / pin weight | Scale, or 10–15% (conventional) / 15–25% (fifth-wheel) as a planning range |
| Truck payload | Yellow Tire and Loading placard on the driver's door jamb |
| Tow rating | Window sticker or the manufacturer's towing guide for that exact configuration |
| GCWR and rear GAWR | Owner's manual and door-jamb certification label |
Run your numbers
Trailer vs. rating check
Type the loaded trailer weight and the tow rating for the exact truck (from the window sticker, the manufacturer's towing guide, or the doorjamb trailering label). This is arithmetic only; it doesn't approve a setup.
Chevrolet's 2026 Trailering Guide says conventional-trailer tongue weight should be 10% to 15% of loaded trailer weight (15% to 25% for gooseneck/fifth-wheel), and must not push the truck past its rear axle rating, GVWR or max tongue load.
Payload budget
Start with the payload number for the exact truck (the yellow "Tire and Loading Information" placard on the driver's door jamb lists the combined weight of occupants and cargo it should never exceed). Then add what you carry.
Half-ton or heavy-duty?
Many travel trailers fit a properly equipped half-ton. Most fifth-wheels, and anything you'll tow far and often, push toward a 2500 or 3500. Heavy-duty figures, per the manufacturers:
| Truck | Manufacturer figures (properly equipped) | Store |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 Chevrolet Silverado HD | 36,000 lb max available towing (diesel); 470 hp Duramax 6.6L turbo-diesel V8, 975 lb-ft | Swant Graber Motors |
| 2026 Ram 2500 | 20,000 lb max available diesel towing; 1,075 lb-ft best-in-class available base diesel torque, per Ram; 430 hp High-Output 6.7L Cummins | Swant Graber Motors |
| 2026 Ram 3500 | 36,610 lb max available High-Output diesel towing; 430 hp High-Output 6.7L Cummins; 1,075 lb-ft base diesel torque | Swant Graber Motors |
| 2026 Ford Super Duty | 40,000 lb max available gooseneck towing; 30,000 lb max available conventional towing; up to 8,000 lb gas payload (2026, 6.8L gas V8, Ford 2026 Super Duty Towing Guide) | Swant Graber Ford |
Questions
Can a half-ton pull a fifth-wheel?
Some light fifth-wheels fit a properly equipped half-ton, but pin weight usually uses up payload. Check the door-jamb payload against the loaded pin weight plus people and gear.
Why does payload matter more than tow rating?
Tongue or pin weight, passengers, hitch and cargo all count against payload, and payload is usually the first limit you hit.
