The short answer
For roads that switch between bare pavement and snow, both manuals point to the automatic mode: AUTO on a Silverado, 4A on an F-150. Save 4H for snowy or icy roads (Chevrolet) or deep snow, sand or mud (Ford), and 4L for slow, low-traction work.
Ford says not to use 4H or 4L on dry, hard-surfaced roads; it can cause noise, tire wear and damage. To shift into 4L, both trucks need to be nearly stopped (3 mph or less) in Neutral.
What each mode is for
| Mode | 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 | 2026 Ford F-150 |
|---|---|---|
| 2H / 2WD | Most streets and highways; best fuel economy | General on-road driving; rear wheels only |
| AUTO / 4A | Road surface conditions vary; slightly lower economy than 2H | Pavement made slippery by sand, water, gravel, snow or ice |
| 4H | Snowy or icy roads, off-roading, plowing snow | Deep snow, sand or mud; not for dry pavement |
| 4L | Deep sand, mud or snow; steep hills; stay under 45 mph; turns traction control and StabiliTrak off | Low-traction surfaces with extra gearing; off-road |
| Shifting into 4L | Stopped or under 3 mph, transmission in N | 3 mph or less, transmission in N |
Mistakes that cost money
- 4H on dry pavement. Ford's manual warns of noise, tire wear and drivetrain damage on dry, hard roads.
- Mismatched tires. Ford says a dissimilar full-size spare limits 4WD; don't exceed 50 mph with a 4WD mode on.
- 4L at speed. Chevrolet: keep it under 45 mph.
- Assuming 4WD helps you stop. Ford's manual warns not to become overconfident; 4WD helps you go, not stop or turn. Winter tires help with all three: see winter tire shopping.
Ram, SUVs and AWD
Ram trucks and our SUVs label modes differently, and many AWD SUVs have no driver-selected mode at all. Check the owner's manual for your model year, or ask us to walk you through it at delivery.

Questions
Should I drive in 4H all winter?
No. Ford says not to use 4H on dry, hard roads, and Chevrolet recommends 2H for most streets and AUTO when conditions vary.
Is AUTO 4WD bad for my truck?
No. Chevrolet and Ford both describe it for changing road conditions. Chevrolet notes slightly lower fuel economy than 2H.
