Five questions that decide it

1. What are you towing?

Under 5,000 lb — a fishing boat, small pontoon, utility trailer — the Explorer handles it with the Class III Trailer Tow Package. Over that, or a travel trailer with real tongue weight, go Expedition.

2. Who rides in the third row?

Kids, occasionally: Explorer. Adults, regularly, or teens on long trips: Expedition.

3. What fits your garage and your budget?

The Explorer is easier to park in town and in older garages, and costs less to buy. Check garage depth before choosing an Expedition MAX.

4. How much cargo behind row three?

The Explorer offers 85.3 cu ft max with seats folded. With all rows up, the Expedition (especially MAX) carries noticeably more.

5. Winter driving?

Both offer 4WD. Explorer Tremor adds clearance and a limited-slip rear in a smaller package; the Expedition has the size and weight of a full-size truck-based SUV.

Common mistakes

  • Buying an Explorer V6 expecting more towing — it is still 5,000 lb.
  • Buying an Expedition for a once-a-year trip when an Explorer fits daily life better.
  • Not weighing the camper you will own in three years.

Third-row and cargo numbers

Explorer: 31.8 in third-row legroom and 16.3 cu ft behind the third row (Ford). The Expedition is far bigger behind the third row, especially MAX. Explorer seats & cargo · Explorer towing.

How much more can an Expedition tow than an Explorer?
