Short answer: Choose the hybrid if you mostly drive around town and county roads: 2026 FWD is EPA-rated 42/35/38 and AWD 40/34/37. Choose the EcoBoost for passing power or the Lobo/Tremor trims; it's rated 22–26 combined. Both can tow 4,000 lb only with AWD and the 4K Tow Package.

What the fuel difference is worth
At 15,000 miles a year, 38 combined (hybrid FWD) burns about 395 gallons; 25 combined (EcoBoost AWD) burns about 600. At $3.00/gal that's roughly $600 a year. Your gap shrinks with mostly highway driving and grows in stop-and-go. Plug your numbers into our fuel cost calculator.
Choose the hybrid if…
- You commute to Rice Lake, Cumberland or Eau Claire most days.
- You want the lowest price of entry (XL hybrid reported $28,145 for 2027).
- You want AWD for winter and good mileage together.
- You'll flat-tow it behind an RV — the hybrid is flat-towable per Ford.
Choose the EcoBoost if…
- You want strong acceleration merging onto Highway 53.
- You want the Lobo or Tremor.
- You plan to tow near 4,000 lb often (AWD XLT 302A with 4K Tow).
Winter notes
Hybrids run the gas engine more in the cold to heat the cabin, so January mileage drops. Either engine on AWD and winter tires handles a Barron County winter. See AWD modes in winter.
