The short answer
Tow by the loaded weight of boat, motor, fuel, gear and trailer together, not the hull weight. Wisconsin requires trailer brakes at a gross weight of 3,000 lb or more, and DNR rules say to remove plants and animals and drain all water from the boat and equipment before you leave the launch.
For the vehicle, match that loaded weight against the tow rating, payload (tongue weight is about 10–15% of the trailer) and the hitch receiver rating. Our weight-class guides list which vehicles we sell are rated for each range.
The weight that counts
Add the boat's dry weight, the motor(s), batteries, fuel, gear and the trailer itself, or better, run the loaded rig across a scale. Then find your class: under 3,500 lb, 3,500–5,000 lb, 5,000–7,500 lb.
Wisconsin rules for boat trailers
| Rule | What it says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Trailer brakes | Required at a gross weight of 3,000 lb or more | Wis. Stat. 347.35(3)(a) |
| Light trailer plate | Optional LTL plate for trailers 3,000 lb or less: $50 a year plus $6 issuance | WisDOT plate fees |
| Heavier trailers | TRL plate, fee by weight | WisDOT plate fees |
| Aquatic invasive species | Inspect; remove attached plants and animals before launching, after loading and before transporting on a highway; drain all water | Wisconsin DNR |
At the ramp
- Prep in the staging area, not on the ramp: straps off, plug in, gear loaded, lines ready.
- 4WD low helps on wet or weedy ramps; keep the truck's rear tires out of the water where possible.
- Back slowly, using the mirror on the side the trailer is drifting toward. Some new trucks add help: Chevrolet lists boat ramp assist and a Trailer Brake Gain Assistant among the trailering features on the 2027 Silverado 1500.
- Before you pull out onto the road: drain, pull weeds off the trailer and bunks, check lights and the safety chains.
Check the numbers
Example: a 4,200 lb boat rig
Enter numbers for the exact truck from its window sticker, door-jamb labels and the manufacturer's towing guide. Arithmetic only; it doesn't approve a setup.
Estimated tongue weight: — (it counts against payload)
OK = under 85%, Close = 85–100%, Over = above the rating. Ford's and Chevrolet's towing guides use 10% (Ford) and 10–15% (Chevrolet) tongue weight for conventional trailers and 15% or more for fifth-wheel/gooseneck.
Example inputs, not a specific vehicle's ratings. Use your truck's window sticker and door-jamb placards.
