Towing a 3,500–5,000 lb trailer: SUVs and trucks that fit

Which vehicles have the rating, how much weight lands on the hitch, and the Wisconsin rules that apply to 3,500–5,000 lb trailers.

The short answer

Answer

Between 3,500 and 5,000 lb loaded, you're past most compact SUVs. Midsize three-row SUVs, midsize pickups and every full-size truck and SUV we sell have manufacturer maximums above 5,000 lb, and the trailer needs its own brakes.

Manufacturer maximums are for comparison: the rating that counts is the one for the exact vehicle (window sticker, door-jamb placards, owner's manual), and the first limit you hit is often payload, GCWR or the hitch receiver rather than the tow rating.

What's in this class

Loads that often land in this range include pontoons and fishing boats on tandem trailers, pop-up and small travel trailers, two-place enclosed snowmobile trailers, but sizes vary widely within each type, so check yours. Use the trailer's GVWR or a scale ticket, not the "dry" weight in a brochure: water, propane, batteries, gear and fuel all count. Manufacturer towing figures assume a properly equipped vehicle with only a driver aboard.

Manufacturer figures from each brand's site (see our model pages for sources), read Oct. 2026. Last column assumes a 5,000 lb trailer. Maximums apply to specific configurations; the truck on the lot may be rated lower.

What trips people up at 3,500–5,000 lb

This is where tandem-axle boat and camper trailers start, and where the gap between a brochure weight and a loaded weight gets big. Pontoons: the boat, motor, fuel, batteries and the trailer itself add up quickly; a scale ticket settles it. Pop-ups and small travel trailers: water in the fresh tank weighs about 8.3 lb per gallon. Brake controllers: electric trailer brakes need an in-cab controller; some trucks and SUVs have one integrated, others need an aftermarket unit. Crossovers: a three-row crossover can be rated here only with its towing package, so read the sticker before assuming.

Run the numbers for your truck

Example: a 5,000 lb trailer

Enter numbers for the exact truck from its window sticker, door-jamb labels and the manufacturer's towing guide. Arithmetic only; it doesn't approve a setup.

OK = under 85%, Close = 85–100%, Over = above the rating. Ford's and Chevrolet's towing guides use 10% (Ford) and 10–15% (Chevrolet) tongue weight for conventional trailers and 15% or more for fifth-wheel/gooseneck.

The example numbers are placeholders, not the ratings of a specific vehicle. Replace them with the numbers on your truck's window sticker, door-jamb placards and the manufacturer's towing guide.
