The short answer
From 7,500 to 10,000 lb, you're in half-ton pickup territory, but only with the right configuration: the maximum ratings belong to specific cab, axle-ratio and package combinations. Hitch weight of 750–1,500 lb (10–15%) makes payload the number to check first.
Manufacturer maximums are for comparison: the rating that counts is the one for the exact vehicle (window sticker, door-jamb placards, owner's manual), and the first limit you hit is often payload, GCWR or the hitch receiver rather than the tow rating.
What's in this class
Loads that often land in this range include large travel trailers, toy haulers, bigger wheelhouses, skid steer and equipment trailers, but sizes vary widely within each type, so check yours. Use the trailer's GVWR or a scale ticket, not the "dry" weight in a brochure: water, propane, batteries, gear and fuel all count. Manufacturer towing figures assume a properly equipped vehicle with only a driver aboard.

What trips people up at 7,500–10,000 lb
The half-ton versus heavy-duty decision lives here. Configuration: a half-ton rated near 10,000 lb in a brochure is usually a specific cab, axle ratio and package; the truck on the lot may be rated thousands of pounds lower. Payload: a 1,000–1,500 lb tongue on a half-ton with a crew in the cab can exceed the door-jamb payload before the tow rating is reached. GCWR: the truck, its load and the trailer combined must stay under the gross combined rating on the sticker. Equipment trailers: skid steers and loaders shift the load; tie-downs and load placement change the tongue weight.
The hitch-weight math for this class
Run the numbers for your truck
Example: a 10,000 lb trailer
Enter numbers for the exact truck from its window sticker, door-jamb labels and the manufacturer's towing guide. Arithmetic only; it doesn't approve a setup.
Estimated tongue weight: — (it counts against payload)
OK = under 85%, Close = 85–100%, Over = above the rating. Ford's and Chevrolet's towing guides use 10% (Ford) and 10–15% (Chevrolet) tongue weight for conventional trailers and 15% or more for fifth-wheel/gooseneck.
The example numbers are placeholders, not the ratings of a specific vehicle. Replace them with the numbers on your truck's window sticker, door-jamb placards and the manufacturer's towing guide.

Questions
What can tow 10,000 lb?
From our lineup, 7 models have a manufacturer maximum of 10,000 lb or more in some configuration; the table above lists the closest fits for this class. Check the exact vehicle's rating, payload and GCWR before you hook up.
Do I need trailer brakes in Wisconsin?
Wisconsin requires brakes on a trailer with a gross weight of 3,000 lb or more (Wis. Stat. 347.35(3)(a)).
Half-ton or heavy duty for a 9,000 lb camper?
A properly configured half-ton can be rated for it, but check the exact truck's payload against a 900–1,350 lb hitch weight plus passengers. If you tow that weight often or far, a 3/4-ton gives more margin.
What is GCWR?
Gross Combined Weight Rating: the maximum weight of the loaded truck plus the loaded trailer, set by the manufacturer for that configuration. It's on the window sticker or in the towing guide.
