The short answer
Over 10,000 lb, a heavy-duty pickup is the usual answer. Fifth-wheel and gooseneck hitches put 15–25% of the trailer's weight in the bed (Chevrolet), so a 14,000 lb fifth wheel can mean 2,100–3,500 lb of pin weight, which exceeds the payload of most half-tons. If you tow for business, check the CDL rules too.
Manufacturer maximums are for comparison: the rating that counts is the one for the exact vehicle (window sticker, door-jamb placards, owner's manual), and the first limit you hit is often payload, GCWR or the hitch receiver rather than the tow rating.
What's in this class
Loads that often land in this range include fifth-wheel campers, large toy haulers, livestock and equipment goosenecks, but sizes vary widely within each type, so check yours. Use the trailer's GVWR or a scale ticket, not the "dry" weight in a brochure: water, propane, batteries, gear and fuel all count. Manufacturer towing figures assume a properly equipped vehicle with only a driver aboard.

What trips people up over 10,000 lb
Most of the mistakes here are about pin weight and paperwork. Pin weight: 15–25% of a 14,000 lb fifth wheel is 2,100–3,500 lb in the bed. Bed rails: a factory puck system or a properly installed rail kit needs to be rated for the hitch. Short beds: fifth wheels on a short-bed truck may need a sliding hitch or a pin box made for short beds so the cab clears in tight turns. Registration and CDL: business towing over 26,000 lb combined with a trailer over 10,000 lb is Class A territory in Wisconsin unless an exemption applies.
The hitch-weight math for this class
Business towing and the CDL line
WisDOT requires a commercial driver license for a combination over 26,000 lb (the highest of GVWR, GCWR, actual or registered weight) when the towed unit is over 10,000 lb: that's a Class A combination. A heavy-duty pickup and a 14,000 lb gooseneck can cross that line. Exemptions cover recreational vehicle operators not engaged in commercial activity (fifth-wheel campers up to 45 ft) and farmers hauling their own supplies, produce or machinery within 150 miles of the farm. See do I need a CDL for a pickup and gooseneck?
Run the numbers for your truck
Example: a 14,000 lb trailer
Enter numbers for the exact truck from its window sticker, door-jamb labels and the manufacturer's towing guide. Arithmetic only; it doesn't approve a setup.
Estimated tongue weight: — (it counts against payload)
OK = under 85%, Close = 85–100%, Over = above the rating. Ford's and Chevrolet's towing guides use 10% (Ford) and 10–15% (Chevrolet) tongue weight for conventional trailers and 15% or more for fifth-wheel/gooseneck.
The example numbers are placeholders, not the ratings of a specific vehicle. Replace them with the numbers on your truck's window sticker, door-jamb placards and the manufacturer's towing guide.

Questions
What can tow 14,000 lb?
From our lineup, 4 models have a manufacturer maximum of 14,000 lb or more in some configuration; the table above lists the closest fits for this class. Check the exact vehicle's rating, payload and GCWR before you hook up.
Do I need trailer brakes in Wisconsin?
Wisconsin requires brakes on a trailer with a gross weight of 3,000 lb or more (Wis. Stat. 347.35(3)(a)).
Do I need a dually for a fifth wheel?
Not always. Check the single-rear-wheel truck's payload and rear axle rating against the trailer's loaded pin weight. Heavy fifth wheels often push buyers to a 3500 or a dually.
Is a gooseneck or fifth-wheel hitch better?
Both put weight over the rear axle. Fifth-wheel hitches are common for campers; goosenecks for livestock and equipment trailers. Use the hitch type the trailer is built for.
