Chevrolet Equinox Reliability and Warranty
Chevrolet Equinox · Reliability and warranty
Is the Chevy Equinox reliable? Warranty, used years and what to check
The factory warranty in plain English, what to look at on a used Equinox, and how certified and extended coverage fit in. Written for Barron-area drivers by Cory Gunderson, Internet Sales & Finance Manager.
Short answer
Reliability in one paragraph
The 2025+ Equinox uses one simple powertrain (1.5L turbo, 175 hp) across every trim and comes with Chevrolet's 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper and 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain limited warranties. Keep up with oil changes on the oil-life monitor, check recalls by VIN, and you have one of the easiest compact SUVs to own in northwest Wisconsin.
New-vehicle coverage
What Chevrolet's warranty covers
| Coverage | Term | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Bumper-to-bumper | 3 yr / 36,000 mi | Most components, defects in materials or workmanship |
| Powertrain | 5 yr / 60,000 mi | Engine, transmission, drive system |
| Roadside assistance | 5 yr / 60,000 mi | Towing, jump starts, lockouts |
| Corrosion | Per Chevrolet warranty booklet | Rust-through coverage terms vary by component |
Whichever comes first. Exact terms are in the warranty booklet for your model year. More: warranty basics · extended service plans · GAP coverage.
Buying used
What to check on a used Equinox
- Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and confirm open recalls were done.
- Ask for service records; turbo engines like on-time oil changes.
- Drive it cold. Listen at start-up and feel for smooth shifts.
- Check the underside for salt corrosion on brake lines and subframe, which matters here more than mileage.
- Prefer certified. A CarBravo certified Equinox adds a multi-point inspection and GM certified coverage. Used Equinox by year.

Gas Equinox vs Equinox EV
They share a name but are different vehicles. The Equinox EV is battery-electric on GM's Ultium platform with its own warranty terms. Swant Graber sells the gas Equinox, and everything on this page covers the gas model.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Chevy Equinox reliable?
The current generation (2025+) shares a proven 1.5L turbo and keeps service simple. Check open recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and keep to the oil-life monitor. For used models, a CarBravo certified Equinox adds inspection and warranty.
What warranty comes with a new Equinox?
Chevrolet's 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty and 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, whichever comes first. Coverage beyond that is available through a GM Extended Service Plan.
What is the difference between the Equinox and the Equinox EV?
They are different vehicles that share a name. The Equinox is a gas 1.5L turbo SUV; the Equinox EV is a battery-electric model on GM's Ultium platform. Swant Graber sells the gas Equinox; every Equinox page and price on our site refers to the gas model.
Which used Equinox years are the best?
Each generation's later years are usually the safer buys: the 2025+ generation is the newest; on the 2018-2024 generation, the 2020-2024 models with the 1.5L turbo are the most common lot finds. Whatever the year, run the VIN for open recalls, get service records and look for a CarBravo certified unit.
Is an extended warranty worth it on an Equinox?
It depends on how long you keep it. If you will be past 60,000 miles before you trade, a GM Extended Service Plan covers repairs after the factory powertrain warranty ends; price and coverage are on the contract, and it can be bought at signing.
