Short answer: For northwest Wisconsin, a Ram 1500 4x4 with the Big Horn Level 1 group (heated seats and wheel), good winter tires and a block heater covers most of what matters. Use 4WD Auto (where equipped) or 4H on snow, 4L only for slow, deep or steep work, and wash the underbody through salt season. For ice houses and snowmobile trailers, check tongue weight against door-jamb payload, not just the tow rating.
Winter equipment that matters most
| Item | Where it comes from | Why it matters here |
|---|---|---|
| Heated front seats + heated wheel | Big Horn Level 1 ($1,695 on our stickers) and up | The single best winter-comfort spend |
| Remote start | Varies by trim/group; check the sticker | Warm cab, defrosted glass |
| Block heater | Cold Weather Group on HD; ask on 1500s or have service install | Easier cold starts |
| Electronic-locking rear axle, skid plates | Off-Road Group ($1,345, 2027 Big Horn sticker) | Deep snow, unplowed field roads, launches |
| Air suspension | Available per Ram; check the trim | Lowers for loading, levels with a trailer |
Your winter and 4x4 questions
Is 4x4 worth it on a Ram 1500 in Wisconsin?
For most people here, yes: every Ram 1500 we pulled from stock was 4x4, and resale demand follows. It costs payload and some mpg (EPA: 3.6L 20/25 2WD vs 19/24 4WD), so a 2WD can make sense for a mostly-highway commuter with good tires.
Which 4WD mode should I use?
Auto or 4H for snow-covered roads at speed, 4L for slow pulls and getting unstuck, 2H on dry pavement. Modes vary by transfer case; see 4WD modes in winter and the owner's manual.
Do I need winter tires on a 4x4?
4WD helps you go, not stop or turn. Dedicated winter tires shorten stopping on snow and ice. Studded tires have Wisconsin restrictions; see our road-rules guides.
Can a Ram 1500 tow an ice house?
Many, yes, within the truck's ratings. The heavy part is tongue weight eating payload. Read the door-jamb label and see towing an ice house and driving on lake ice; ice safety is your call, never ours.
Does winter change maintenance?
Ram's handbook says short trips, towing and extreme cold bring the oil-change message sooner, and severe conditions may call for more frequent service. See the maintenance schedule.
How do I fight rust?
Rinse the underbody and frame through salt season and give it a thorough spring wash. Swant Graber's optional Appearance Package includes rustproofing for doors and body panels; it's never pre-installed or added to the price.
Snowmobile and side-by-side trailers?
Light enough for any 1500 engine, but if it has brakes or you add a second sled and gear, check the trailer's gross. Wisconsin requires brakes at 3,000 lb gross or more; see Trailer Tow Group II.
