The short answer
Decide what the truck must carry and tow, pick the smallest size that does it, and set a total budget (payment, insurance, fuel, tires) before choosing a trim.
Compact (Maverick) and midsize (Colorado, Ranger) trucks cost less and park easier; full-size (Silverado 1500, Ram 1500, F-150) tow and carry more. A good used truck can be a smart first truck. Check it carefully.
Five decisions
- Cab: regular, extended or crew. Who rides with you?
- Bed: what goes in it, and do you need it to close the tailgate on an ATV or sheet goods? See cab and bed guide.
- Size: compact, midsize or full-size.
- New or used: new brings full warranty and current tech; used costs less. See used trucks in Barron County.
- Budget: the out-the-door price and the total monthly cost of owning it.

Insurance and payment
Get an insurance quote on the exact VIN before you buy; rates vary by model and driver. Compare loan offers on the amount financed and term, not the payment. our price-and-payment checklist walks through it.
The short answer
For a daily-driver truck, size it for the commute and the garage, then check that it covers your occasional towing. A compact or midsize truck, or a hybrid, often makes more sense than a heavy-duty for a Barron-to-Rice-Lake or Eau Claire commute.
Ford lists 42 MPG EPA-est. city for the Maverick hybrid FWD and up to 4,000 lb towing with the 4K Tow Package. Full-size half-tons add room and towing; compare the fuel-economy label on the exact truck.
Winter commuting here
4WD or AWD helps you get moving; winter tires help you stop and turn. See our winter tire guide. Remote start and heated seats and steering wheels are listed on many trims; check the window sticker.
Do the mileage math
Barron to Rice Lake is about 13 miles; Barron to Eau Claire about 53. A daily Eau Claire round trip is about 26,000 miles a year over 250 workdays, enough that fuel economy and lease mileage limits matter.

More questions
Is a Maverick a real truck?
It has an open bed and Ford lists up to 1,500 lb payload and up to 4,000 lb towing with the 4K Tow Package. For heavier trailers, look at Ranger, Colorado or a half-ton.
Do I need 4WD to commute in winter?
Not strictly, but 4WD or AWD plus winter tires gives the most traction in snow. Front-wheel-drive Mavericks exist; AWD is available.
Questions
What's a good first truck?
One that fits your real use and budget. Compact and midsize trucks (Maverick, Colorado, Ranger) cost less to buy and run; a used half-ton gives more capability for the money if it checks out.
Can I finance a first vehicle with little credit history?
Ask which financing options fit a first purchase. Financing depends on credit approval and lender terms.
