Is a Front-Wheel-Drive Chevy Trax OK in a Wisconsin Winter?

Every Trax is front-wheel drive. Here's an honest look at what that means in Barron County.

Short answer: Yes, for most drivers who mainly use plowed roads, if you put on winter tires. Tires affect stopping and turning more than AWD does. If you live on an unplowed road or steep driveway, or must leave before the plows, choose an AWD Trailblazer or Equinox.

Prices are Chevrolet MSRP before destination. 2027 prices are from Chevrolet.com's 2027 Trax announcement (Oct 2026); confirm final pricing and destination on the window sticker.

What FWD does and doesn't do

  • It does put the engine's weight over the driven wheels, which helps traction from a stop.
  • It doesn't help you stop or turn on ice. No drive system does — that's the tires' job.
  • Ground clearance matters in unplowed snow. The Trax is a small SUV, not an off-roader, and the ACTIV trim is a look, not AWD.

Our winter checklist for a Trax

  • Dedicated winter tires on their own wheels, mounted around Thanksgiving. Our parts and service team can quote a set.
  • Good wiper blades and winter washer fluid.
  • Remote start (available) to warm and defrost before you go — ask which builds include it.
  • A winter kit: scraper, shovel, blanket, traction sand.
  • Wash off road salt through the season, especially underneath.
  • Deer are most active at dawn and dusk in fall — see deer crash help.

When to step up to AWD

If you're on a rural road that gets plowed late, have a long uphill driveway, or drive to a shift before the plows, the Trailblazer (AWD available) or Equinox (AWD available) is worth the difference. Compare: Trax vs Trailblazer vs Equinox.

Remote start, heated seats and cold-start tips

Remote start is standard from the 2026 LT up (not on LS/1RS). Heated seats and heated wheel come in packages on upper trims — see packages and features. Smaller-wheel trims (17-in LS/LT) are cheaper to fit with dedicated winter tires than the 19-in 2RS.

Trax questions

Does the Trax have remote start?

Yes on 2026 LT, 2RS and ACTIV per Chevrolet.com; not on LS or 1RS.

Is the Chevy Trax good in snow?

With winter tires, a front-wheel-drive Trax handles typical plowed-road winter driving well. On unplowed rural roads or steep driveways, an AWD Trailblazer or Equinox is the better choice.

Can you get a Trax with AWD?

No. The Trax is front-wheel drive only, including the ACTIV.

Do I really need winter tires on a Trax?

For northwest Wisconsin, we recommend them. They improve stopping and turning on snow and ice more than any drive system.

Does the Trax have remote start?

It's available; ask us which trims and builds include it.
