Short answer

  • A properly equipped 2027 Ford Expedition tows up to 9,600 lb per Ford, which takes 4x4 and Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow (61E).
  • Ford lists a MAX 4x2 at up to 6,300 lb; other configurations fall in between.
  • Payload, hitch rating and tongue weight still limit you — check the door-jamb sticker on the exact vehicle.

Towing tips from our lot

  • Use loaded trailer weight, not the brochure's dry weight.
  • Payload goes fast with eight people — family plus gear plus tongue weight can hit the limit before the trailer does.
  • Use Tow/Haul mode; Pro Trailer Backup Assist and Hitch Assist are available.
  • Long, heavy, high-sided trailers in Wisconsin crosswinds tow better behind a truck. See the Super Duty guide.

Do you need the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package?

If you want anything near the top rating, yes. Ford revised the package and made it standard on 4x4 for 2025. In the 2027 order guide it is listed as 61E: optional on 4x4 Active 202A, Platinum 600A and Platinum Elite 60D, standard with Stealth Performance (19B), Ultimate (17A) and Tremor. Without it you still get Trailer Tow Prep (hitch and wiring) and a lower rating. Check the sticker line before you hook up a 7,000-lb camper.

Worked example: pontoon to Lake Chetek

A 22-ft tritoon with a 150-hp outboard and tandem trailer weighs about 4,500-5,000 lb loaded. Keep tongue weight at 10-15% (450-750 lb) and count it against payload with the family aboard. Well inside any 4x4 Expedition. A 30-ft travel trailer at 7,500 lb loaded is doable on a properly equipped standard 4x4 but leaves little margin; consider a Super Duty above that.

Towing tech that helps

Pro Trailer Backup Assist and Pro Trailer Hitch Assist became standard for 2025; blind-spot coverage extends to the trailer. BlueCruise does not operate while towing. The 10-speed has a tow/haul mode; use 4-high on gravel launches.

Does the High Output V6 tow more?

No. The 440-hp HO (Tremor, Platinum 19B/17A) feels stronger merging but the maximum rating comes from the chassis and tow package.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package to tow the maximum?

For the top rating, yes in practice: Ford lists the 9,600-lb maximum (standard-length 4x4) with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package. Ford made that package standard on 4x4 models for 2025; on 2027 it is listed as standard with Stealth Performance/Ultimate and Tremor and optional (61E) on other 4x4 groups, so check the window sticker.

Does the Expedition MAX tow less?

On 4x4, yes: Ford lists 9,000 lb for MAX 4x4 vs 9,600 lb for the standard body. On 4x2 the MAX is slightly higher at 6,300 lb vs 6,000 lb.

Can I use BlueCruise while towing?

No. Ford's BlueCruise hands-free mode is not available while towing.

How much can a 2027 Expedition tow?

Ford lists up to 9,600 lb when properly equipped with 4x4 and the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package (61E). 4x2 and MAX ratings are lower; Ford lists a MAX 4x2 at up to 6,300 lb. We will confirm 2027 figures against Ford's 2027 towing guide when it posts and check the door-jamb sticker on the exact vehicle.

What do I need for the Expedition's 9,600 lb rating?

A properly equipped 4x4 with Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow (61E), which is optional on 4x4 Active Touring and Platinum and standard on Tremor.

Does every 2027 Expedition have a trailer brake controller?

Ford's 2027 ordering information lists an integrated trailer brake controller across the lineup; we confirm on your build.

Can an Expedition tow a 30-foot camper?

Many 30-foot-plus trailers load over 8,000 lb, which is close to the Expedition's maximum. For that size we usually recommend a pickup.

What does an Expedition cost out the door at Swant Graber Ford?

We sell new Fords at invoice pricing with no mandatory dealer add-ons. Out the door is the agreed price plus Wisconsin sales tax, title and registration, plus our $127.50 documentary fee, which is the only dealer fee.
