Short answer

  • The 2027 Ford Expedition MAX is the extended-length version, adding cargo space behind the third row for $3,000 more on the same trim (Ford Build & Price, ZIP 54812).
  • MAX is offered on XL, Active, Platinum and King Ranch — not Tremor.
  • Choose MAX if you regularly use all three rows and still need cargo room; choose standard for easier parking, older garages, or if you want a Tremor.

Will it fit my garage?

Measure inside the door-to-wall depth of your garage and leave room to walk around. Older lake cabins and 1970s–80s attached garages are where MAX owners get surprised. Bring your measurement in and we'll stand next to both on the lot.

Who should buy which

Pick MAX
Five-plus kids or carpools, travel sports, long road trips with luggage, grandparents riding along.
Pick standard
Third row used occasionally, tight garage, heavy towing, or you want the Tremor.

Ford.com and KBB spec listings for 2025 (same generation as 2027). Cargo figures vary slightly by source (KBB lists 36.1 cu ft behind the MAX third row); we quote Ford's optimized numbers.

Does the MAX give more third-row legroom?

No, and this surprises people. KBB and Car and Driver both note the extra length goes to cargo, not passengers. Third-row legroom is about 36.5 in either way. Adults under six feet fit for an hour; for the trip to Duluth or the Dells, put the teens back there and keep the luggage behind them, which is where the MAX earns its money.

What 14 extra cubic feet looks like

Standard, 3rd row up
Weekly groceries, a folded stroller, or two carry-ons upright.
MAX, 3rd row up
Four hockey bags, a cooler and a duffel, or a full week of luggage for six.
Seats folded
Either body takes a 4x8 sheet partially; the MAX takes 8-ft lumber with the hatch closed more easily.

Garage fit: measure these four things

  1. Door-to-wall depth: add at least 24 in to the vehicle length for walking room (standard needs ~19.5 ft, MAX ~20.5 ft).
  2. Door height: roof is about 78 in; a 7-ft door clears.
  3. Door width: about 94.6 in with mirrors; fold them on a 9-ft single door.
  4. Obstacles: freezers, workbenches, the step into the house.

Price difference and resale

Expect $3,000 more starting MSRP for MAX on the same trim and group (trims & prices). On the used market MAX units are fewer, so they tend to hold value well with large families; see used years to buy.

Towing: why the MAX rates lower on 4x4

The longer, heavier body uses some of the combined weight rating, so Ford lists 9,000 lb for MAX 4x4 vs 9,600 lb standard. Paradoxically MAX 4x2 is rated a bit higher (6,300 vs 6,000 lb). For a boat or camper the longer wheelbase is steadier on the highway. Details: towing guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Ford Expedition and Expedition MAX?

Length and cargo. Ford lists the standard Expedition at about 209.9 in long on a 122.5 in wheelbase and the MAX at about 221.7 in on a 131.5 in wheelbase. Seating and legroom are essentially the same; the MAX adds about 14 cu ft behind the third row (Ford: 22.9 vs 37.4 cu ft, current generation). Tremor is standard length only.

How much cargo space is in an Expedition MAX?

Ford lists 37.4 cu ft behind the third row, 84.5 behind the second and 123.1 cu ft with the second and third rows folded (current generation).

Does the Expedition MAX have more third-row legroom?

No. Third-row legroom is about 36.5 in on both bodies; the MAX's extra length goes to cargo.

Does the Ford Expedition seat 7 or 8?

Both. With the second-row bench it seats 8; with second-row captain's chairs it seats 7. Trims and packages decide which; King Ranch and many Platinum builds come with captain's chairs.

Will a Ford Expedition fit in a standard 2-car garage?

Usually. Ford lists about 209.9 in (17.5 ft) for the standard Expedition and about 221.7 in (18.5 ft) for the MAX. Many 2-car garages are 20 to 24 ft deep, but measure door-to-wall, door height (about 78 in roof height) and width with mirrors (about 94.6 in) before you buy.

Is the Expedition MAX available on every trim?

No. Ford's 2027 ordering information offers the MAX (extended length) on XL, Active, Platinum and King Ranch. The Tremor is standard length only.

How much more does the Expedition MAX cost?

$3,000 more than the same trim in standard length per Ford Build & Price for ZIP 54812 (Oct 31, 2026): Active $64,415 vs. $67,415, Platinum $71,865 vs. $74,865, King Ranch $84,010 vs. $87,010. Tremor is standard length only; exact price is on the window sticker.

Does the MAX tow less?

Some configurations are rated lower. Ford lists a MAX 4x2 at up to 6,300 lb; the 9,600 lb maximum requires a properly equipped 4x4 with Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow.

Is the MAX the same as the old Expedition EL?

Yes — MAX is Ford's name for the extended-length Expedition.
