What does a Wisconsin teen need to get a driver license?
Reviewed by Cory Gunderson, Internet Sales & Finance Manager · Last checked October 27, 2026
Short answer
A Wisconsin teen needs to be at least 16, pass driver education, hold an instruction permit for at least six violation-free months, log 50 hours of supervised driving (10 at night), have an adult sponsor certify those hours, and pass the road test.
The details
WisDOT's checklist for the probationary license also includes:
- a completed driver license application (MV3001) with a Social Security number
- proof of identity, name and date of birth, and legal status
- school enrollment (or graduation, an equivalency or a home-based program)
- the required fees
WisDOT suggests the Road Ready app or a printed log to track the 50 hours. Probationary drivers must stay completely sober while driving and wear a seat belt.
