Who handles the title and plates when I buy from a Wisconsin dealer?
Reviewed by Cory Gunderson, Internet Sales & Finance Manager · Last checked October 27, 2026
Short answer
The dealer does. WisDOT says that when you buy through a licensed Wisconsin dealer, the dealer submits the title and registration paperwork for you. You sign the application at the dealership, and the vehicle must show Wisconsin plates or a temporary plate within two business days of purchase.
The details
At Swant Graber, the title and plate application is part of the paperwork you sign with us, and we submit it to WisDOT. WisDOT's title fee for an original title or a title transfer is $214.50, per its fee page linked below. Registration fees depend on the vehicle type and on whether you transfer a plate you already own. Source: WisDOT, referenced Oct 28, 2026. Fees may change; check the source for current amounts.
- Bring: your driver license and, if you're trading, the title or your lender's payoff details.
- Financing: if there's a loan, the lender is listed on the title application.
- Out of state? On financed deals, Swant Graber handles the out-of-state paperwork. A cash out-of-state deal is the selling price plus our $127.50 doc fee, and you title and register at home.
