Short answer

Yes — for most new drivers the Trax is a strong first car: standard automatic emergency braking and lane keep assist, Teen Driver built in, 30 mpg combined, real rear-seat room and a factory 3/36 and 5/60 warranty, all at the lowest Chevy SUV price. Pair it with winter tires.

What Chevy Safety Assist includes (standard)

  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Front Pedestrian Braking
  • Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning
  • Following Distance Indicator
  • IntelliBeam auto high beams

Also standard: rear vision camera, Rear Seat Reminder and Teen Driver (Chevrolet.com).

Available driver aids

Adaptive Cruise Control, Rear Park Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert are available, generally on LT, 2RS and ACTIV builds. For a new driver, blind-zone and rear cross-traffic alert are the two we'd add first. See packages and features.

Teen Driver, explained

Teen Driver lets a parent register a key fob so the vehicle can mute audio until front belts are buckled, set an audible speed warning, limit radio volume, and produce a report card of distance, top speed and safety-system events. Set it up at delivery — we'll walk you through it.

A first car in rural Barron County

  • Winter tires on the FWD Trax are the single biggest safety upgrade (Trax in winter).
  • Deer: dawn and dusk on county roads — brake firmly, don't swerve. Deer crash help.
  • Insurance: a small, low-horsepower SUV with standard AEB usually quotes well; get a quote on the actual VIN before you sign.
  • Protection: a new driver with a small down payment should read GAP coverage; longer coverage via extended service plans.

Reliability and warranty

3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper and 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain limited warranties, whichever comes first. The 2026 Trax is a Consumer Reports Recommended SUV per Chevrolet.com. Check open recalls on any Trax by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Buying used? Look for CarBravo certified.

Good for commuters too

30 mpg combined, ~395 miles a tank, wireless CarPlay and available adaptive cruise make the Trax an easy Barron–Rice Lake or Eau Claire commuter. Not rated to tow.
