How dark can window tint be in Wisconsin?
Reviewed by Cory Gunderson, Internet Sales & Finance Manager · Last checked October 27, 2026
Short answer
For aftermarket film, the front side and vent windows must let at least 50% of visible light through (glass and film combined), and the rear side and rear windows at least 35%. Reflective film isn't allowed. Factory-tinted glass installed by the manufacturer is permitted.
The details
These limits are in Wisconsin Administrative Code Trans 305.32:
- Front side and vent windows: at least 50% light transmission with film, non-reflective.
- Medical exception: with a physician's written statement carried in the vehicle, front side windows can go to 35%.
- Rear side windows and rear window: at least 35% with film, non-reflective.
- Mirrors: if the rear window lets through less than 60% of light, the vehicle needs outside mirrors on both the left and right sides.
- No signs, posters or other non-transparent material on the front side windows, except government-issued stickers.
Many trucks and SUVs come with darker factory privacy glass behind the driver. That's manufacturer glass, so the film limits don't apply to it.
