Pick the manual if…
- Engagement is the reason you're buying a Mustang.
- You want a V8 anyway — the stick only comes with the 5.0L.
- It's mainly a summer car on back roads around the lakes.
Pick the 10-speed automatic if…
- You want quicker launches.
- It'll see winter or stop-and-go traffic — the automatic is easier on slick roads.
- You want adaptive cruise with stop-and-go.
- You want the EcoBoost — it's the only choice there.
Winter and the manual
A manual Mustang can be driven in winter on proper winter tires, but smooth throttle and clutch work matter more on a rear-drive car. Most Barron-area manual owners we talk to store theirs for the season. See Mustang in a Wisconsin winter.
Ordering a manual
Manual cars can be harder to find on the lot. If we don't have the trim and color you want, we can locate one or order it at invoice. Compare engines in EcoBoost vs GT vs Dark Horse.

GT manual vs Dark Horse TREMEC
Ford's spec wording: GT "6-speed manual transmission with rev matching"; Dark Horse "TREMEC 6-speed manual." Forum threads still mention the older Getrag MT-82 from S550 GTs; for 2024-and-later cars, go by Ford's spec and the sticker. Both offer rev matching you can switch off, and launch control in Track Apps.
Axles change with the transmission
On the Dark Horse, the manual gets the 3.73 TORSEN rear; the 10-speed gets a 3.55 TORSEN (Ford). The GT runs a 3.55 limited-slip. Shorter gearing means livelier acceleration and slightly higher highway rpm.
Fuel economy by transmission
The 10-speed usually matches or beats the manual on EPA highway figures thanks to taller top gears. Confirm on fueleconomy.gov for your exact build.
