Short answer: A Mustang can be driven through a Wisconsin winter on four dedicated winter tires, but it's not the right only vehicle if you must get out on unplowed county roads. Many Barron-area owners store theirs or keep a 4x4 for snow days.
2026 prices are Ford MSRP before the $1,995 destination charge (Ford 2026 price list, Apr 2026). Ford had not published 2027 Mustang pricing as of October 31, 2026.
What makes a Mustang different in snow
- Rear-wheel drive on every Mustang — there's no AWD gas Mustang.
- Low ground clearance — deep snow and the ridge the plow leaves at the end of your driveway are the real limit.
- Performance tires — summer tires lose grip in the cold, even on dry pavement.
If you drive it all winter
- Fit four dedicated winter tires. Summer performance tires are unsafe in the cold. A second set of wheels makes the spring/fall swap easier.
- Use the slippery/snow drive mode and leave traction and stability control on.
- The EcoBoost automatic is the easiest winter Mustang. Smooth throttle matters more on a V8 or a manual.
- Add weight carefully: keep the trunk clear of loose items; plan your route around plowed roads.
- Wash off salt regularly, especially underneath. Brine on Hwy 8 and 53 stays on all winter.
- Carry a winter kit: scraper, small shovel, blanket, phone charger. Remote start helps on sub-zero mornings — see our remote start and winter page.
- Watch for deer at dusk October through December. If you hit one, see deer crash help.
If you store it
- Fill the tank before storage.
- Use a battery maintainer.
- Store it clean and dry, after washing off any salt.
- Inflate tires to the placard pressure or a little above to avoid flat spots.
- Keep mice out of the cabin and air intake.

Need a winter vehicle too?
A lot of Mustang owners here pair it with something for snow days: the Bronco Sport, Maverick or Explorer. If you're choosing a Mustang knowing it'll see winter, the EcoBoost with the 10-speed automatic is the pick.

Use Slippery mode, not Sport
Mustang's selectable drive modes include a Slippery setting that softens throttle and keeps stability control active. Pair it with four winter tires on their own wheels; summer performance tires on GT Performance Pack and Dark Horse cars should not be driven below about 40°F.
Cold starts and fuel
Use remote start for warmup (Remote Rev is not a warmup). Keep premium fuel; winter blends cost a little mpg.

Mustang questions
Can you daily-drive a Mustang in a Wisconsin winter?
Yes, with four dedicated winter tires and the Slippery drive mode. It is rear-wheel drive with no AWD option, so tires matter more than anything. Many Barron-area owners store theirs December to March instead.
Does the Mustang need premium fuel?
Ford's horsepower ratings are on 93-octane premium. Lower octane is permitted per the owner's manual, but you give up some power; for full rated output buy premium.
Can you drive a Mustang in the snow?
Yes, carefully, with four dedicated winter tires. It's rear-wheel drive with low clearance, so deep or unplowed snow is a problem.
Is there an AWD Mustang?
No. Every gas Mustang is rear-wheel drive.
Which Mustang is best for winter?
The EcoBoost with the 10-speed automatic, on winter tires, using the slippery/snow drive mode.
How should I store a Mustang for the winter?
Fill the tank, use a battery maintainer, store it clean and dry, and set the tires at or slightly above placard pressure.
