Short answer: New Mustangs carry Ford's 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper and 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. For used, 2018-2023 S550 cars are the favorite buys. Insurance runs higher for young drivers and V8s, so quote the exact VIN first.

Is the Coyote V8 reliable?

The 5.0L Coyote has been in production since the 2011 model year and is one of Ford's best-proven engines. Owner talking points: some high-rpm and track-driven cars use oil between changes, so check the dipstick; follow the severe-duty schedule if you do track days. Ford cites J.D. Power ranking the 2026 Mustang best-in-class in initial quality among sporty cars. The 2.3L EcoBoost is shared with other Fords and is also well-understood.

Run the VIN through Mustang recalls by year and look for a Ford Blue Advantage certified car.

Insurance for younger drivers

We don't publish rate numbers because they vary by driver. What moves the quote: age and record, ZIP, coverage limits, and model (an EcoBoost is usually cheaper to insure than a GT or Dark Horse). Get a quote on the exact VIN before you sign; Ford Co-Pilot360 safety features may help with some insurers.

Running costs: fuel and tires

Ford's horsepower ratings are on 93-octane. Performance tires on GT Performance Pack and Dark Horse wear faster than all-seasons, and a second set of winter tires on wheels is a smart buy here. Book service at our service department.

Verified on ford.com/cars/mustang (2026 lineup) on Oct 31, 2026: engine ratings on 93-octane fuel, transmissions and axles, convertible models, dimensions, 12.4-in cluster + 13.2-in touchscreen, drift brake, line-lock, MagneRide on Dark Horse, FX / RTR / TLD / Dark Horse SC, new colors. Items marked "confirm" come from independent tests or Ford order-guide wording and are checked against your window sticker.

Mustang questions

What warranty comes with a new Mustang?

Ford's New Vehicle Limited Warranty: 3 years/36,000 miles bumper-to-bumper and 5 years/60,000 miles powertrain.

What are the best used Mustang years?

For the previous S550 generation, buyers favor 2018-2023 (the 2018 update brought the Gen-3 Coyote and 10-speed). The current S650 began with 2024. Always check recalls and history.

Is a Mustang expensive to insure for a young driver?

Usually more than a sedan, and a V8 GT or Dark Horse costs more than an EcoBoost. Rates depend on age, record, ZIP and coverage; get a quote on the exact VIN before you sign. We don't publish rate figures.

Is the Mustang 5.0 Coyote engine reliable?

Yes, generally. The Coyote V8 has been in production since 2011. Follow the maintenance schedule and check oil levels on hard-driven or tracked cars.

Does the Mustang need premium fuel?

Ford's horsepower ratings are on 93-octane premium. Lower octane is permitted per the owner's manual, but you give up some power; for full rated output buy premium.
