Ram 2500 Power Wagon vs Rebel: which off-road heavy-duty Ram fits you?

Lockers and a winch, or a tow-ready truck that still handles a trail. Here is how to choose.

Short answer

The short answer

Both are Ram 2500 4x4s, and for 2027 both can be ordered with the 6.7L Cummins HO (430 hp, 1,075 lb-ft), per Ram. The Power Wagon is the trail tool: electronic-locking front and rear differentials, an electronic front sway-bar disconnect (class-exclusive, per Ram), Bilstein monotube shocks, skid plates and an available factory winch, starting at $89,560 with the Cummins, destination included. The Rebel keeps the off-road look and hardware on a standard 2500 chassis, with more payload and towing for campers and trailers. If you crawl rocks or pull stuck trucks out of a field, pick Power Wagon. If you tow most weekends and take two-tracks to deer camp, the Rebel is usually the better buy. Confirm every item on the window sticker of the exact VIN.

What each part does

Lockers, disconnect and winch, in plain words

  • Locking differentials make both wheels on an axle turn together, so a truck with one tire on ice or in the air keeps moving. Power Wagon locks the front too, which is what gets you up a washed-out logging road.
  • Sway-bar disconnect lets the front axle articulate so all four tires stay on the ground over ruts and rocks. On the highway it reconnects for stable towing.
  • Winch: self-recovery or pulling a buddy's truck out of a ditch. Remember it adds weight on the front axle.
  • Payload trade-off: the extra off-road hardware is heavy. That is why a HEMI Power Wagon can be rated as low as 1,570 lb of payload, which a hitch, passengers and gear use up fast.

Cummins

Can I get either one with the Cummins?

Yes. For 2027, Ram offers the Power Wagon with the Cummins HO for the first time: 430 hp, 1,075 lb-ft, 3.42 axle, a 31-gallon tank and Ram's estimated range of about 600 miles, from $89,560 including destination. Ram's chart rates the Power Wagon Cummins at roughly 19,630 lb towing and 2,930 lb payload. The Rebel has offered the Cummins too, and it is the usual choice when a big camper is the main job. The diesel adds cost and front-end weight, so for a plow-and-trail truck the HEMI can still make more sense. Our Cummins vs HEMI guide walks through the math.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Power Wagon or Rebel?

Rebel is the off-road-styled truck with HEMI or Cummins on a regular 2500 chassis and more payload. Power Wagon adds locking front and rear diffs and sway-bar disconnect for real trail work, at the cost of payload (as low as 1,570 lb on the HEMI Power Wagon per Ram's chart). For plowing and hauling, Rebel; for unplowed fire lanes and deer camp two-tracks, Power Wagon. Power Wagon vs Rebel.

What does the Power Wagon add?

A 2500 4x4 Crew Cab 6'4" with solid axles, electronic-locking front and rear differentials, electronic front sway-bar disconnect (class-exclusive, per Ram), Bilstein monotube shocks, skid plates and an available factory winch. Ram lists 13.2 in ground clearance on the Cummins version.

Can I get the Power Wagon with the Cummins?

Yes, for 2027, the first time ever: 430 hp, 1,075 lb-ft, 3.42 axle, 31-gallon tank, from $89,560 including destination (Ram). Ram's chart rates it about 19,630 lb towing and 2,930 lb payload.

Does the Ram 2500 Rebel have a front locker?

The Power Wagon is the Ram HD with front and rear electronic lockers plus sway-bar disconnect. Rebel equipment varies by year and package, so check the window sticker of the exact truck.

Why does the Power Wagon have less payload?

Its extra off-road hardware (lockers, disconnect, winch, skid plates, lift) adds weight. Ram rates the HEMI Power Wagon as low as 1,570 lb payload; the Cummins version about 2,930 lb.

Is a Power Wagon good for towing a camper?

It can tow about 19,630 lb with the Cummins on Ram's chart, but low payload limits pin and tongue weight. For a heavy camper most weekends, a Rebel Cummins or a 3500 is usually the better tool.
