For a plow truck, the HEMI usually fits better: it weighs less up front and leaves more payload. Diesel in the cold
Running a Cummins through a Barron County winter
- Plug in the block heater on subzero nights; a few hours before start-up is typical.
- Winter-blend diesel from busy local stations; keep at least a quarter tank to limit condensation.
- DEF freezes around 12°F; Ram's system is designed to heat and thaw it, so a frozen tank at startup is normal. Store spare jugs indoors.
- Let it warm briefly and use the grille cover on the coldest days; avoid long idles.
- Batteries: have both load-tested each fall.

Is there an auxiliary switch bank for plows and lights?
Yes. Ram HD offers auxiliary upfitter switches for plow lights, beacons and accessories. Pair them with dual alternators ($495 on our stickers, 400 or 480 amps) if you run a lot of lighting.
Does the 6.4L HEMI get an 8-speed?
Yes. Ram lists the 8HP75-LCV 8-speed with the 6.4L HEMI, with an electronic column shifter on all configurations, which Ram calls the preferred setup for snowplow and first-responder use.
Which is better for plowing, the HEMI or the Cummins?
